Immigrants who come in as war refugees tend to be of an older age, married and have families. They mostly lack English skills and have no economic means. Also they mostly prefer rural areas to urban centers (Dr. Bazian, Lecture 7. September, 19, 2012). Both the interviewees below immigrated with their parents and families.

Karam's Story:
Karam-25 was born and raised in Iraq . He Moved to the United States with his family four years ago. Unlike the general tendencies for refugees, Karam's family is very well educated. Karam answered to questions concerning his background, his opinion about Islam in the Bay Area, and the challenges he/Muslims face here. |

Unis's story
Unis is a current freshman at U.C. Berkeley. Unis immigrated with his paents from Palestine when he was in elementary school, in order to escape what was going on the in the Gaza Strip at the time. In this video, he describes some of the challenges that he faced after immigration, such as learning English and adjusting to American society. He goes on to describe why education is important to him as well as the things he really appreciates about his life in the Bay Area. |
